ISO Compliance for Historic Architectural Practice

Kay Pilsbury Thomas Architects (KPTA) is a small, award-winning team of 10 architects, interior designers, and technologists. They focus on sympathetic and sustainable restoration of historic buildings and have worked on prestigious projects like Spains Hall, a Grade I listed Elizabethan estate house built around 1570.

In 2007, KPTA partnered with Statius to implement the ISO 9001 quality management system (QMS). Thanks to Statius’s ISO consultancy services, KPTA achieved certification on their first attempt through TÜV, an internationally recognised and accredited certification body.

Projects and Achievements

Since our initial collaboration, Statius’s ISO Consultants have continued to help KPTA optimise their systems and stay ahead of industry standards, ensuring continuous improvements. Our key contributions include:

  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management
    • In 2012, we helped KPTA upgrade their processes to meet ISO 14001. This wasn’t just about meeting standards but more about enabling KPTA to effectively manage environmental risks and improve sustainability. The new system streamlined operations, reduced waste, and created long-term efficiencies in how they approach every project.

  • ISO 45001: Health and Safety Management
    • After ISO 14001, we helped KPTA implement ISO 45001, focusing on workplace safety. This included creating a safer working environment through detailed risk assessments and putting corrective actions in place. The result? A safer, more productive workforce, ensuring both employee well-being and smooth project delivery.

Now, KPTA is running an integrated management system that combines ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001. Regular audits ensure they stay compliant and continuously improve their operations, ensuring that KPTA is always ready for new challenges.

Benefits of Collaboration

Working with Statius’s ISO Consultants has provided KPTA with several key benefits:

  • Increased Efficiency: Staff can focus on their work, while Statius handles time-consuming audits and compliance processes, reducing internal costs.
  • Better Risk Management: With our help, KPTA implemented clear, actionable risk management processes. These systems ensured they were always prepared to tackle issues before they escalated, reducing project delays and increasing client satisfaction.
  • More Tender Opportunities: ISO certification opened the door to new tender opportunities. With a robust and internationally recognised certification in place, KPTA became more attractive to clients and partners, leading to more projects and higher revenue.
  • Continuous Improvement with Ongoing Support: We continued to work with KPTA, conducting regular audits, refining processes, and ensuring they maintained the high standards they were committed to. This partnership ensured KPTA’s systems were always evolving, creating value for the business long-term.
