What is BS 1090 - Construction product regulations?

Fabricated steel components are deemed “safety critical”, as a result of which, if you supply or manufacture products it is now a legal requirement for you to comply with the stringent requirements of BS EN 1090 and ensure that your products are appropriately UKCA/CE marked.

BS 1090 requires an organisation to ensure that appropriate controls are in place throughout the manufacturing process; design, purchasing, fabrication, testing and, where it is undertaken, on site installation. Documented processes and practices (a factory production control system) need to be in place for:

  • Determining the execution clause
    • Different execution clauses address the level of risk, and the degree of control required
  • Specifying and purchasing materials and consumables
  • Checking received goods
  • Controlling and checking the manufacturing process
    • You need to know who has done what
  • Staff training, qualifications and competence
  • Calibrating equipment

The benefits of BS 1090

BS 1090 offers numerous benefits that ensure that appropriate controls are in place. By adhering to these standards, organisations can streamline their processes and improve resource management, leading to a more sustainable approach in the industry.
