ISO 22301
What is ISO 22301 - The Business Continuity Management System?
All organisations are subject to risk on a number of levels, most typically:
- Strategic risk – emanating from the outside world
- Process risk – emanating from internal processes and practices
- Financial risk – emanating from the business model
The ISO 22301 standard provides a framework for systematically identifying and processing all risks within an organisation and then developing strategies, processes and practices for avoiding and mitigating them.
The standard specifies the requirements necessary to implement, maintain and improve a management system to protect the organisation against disruptions. The implementation stages would include:
- Identifying risk
- Assessing the probability of risk
- Preparing for eventualities
- Reducing the likelihood and severity of any event
- Responding to events
- Recovering from disruption
In short, 22301 is a framework for building organisational resilience through the effective application of a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS).
