What Are the Most Popular ISO Standards Today?

ISO standards have evolved and will continue to evolve with market and business needs.

ISO 9001 is certainly the most popular standard, partially due to it being around for the longest period of time.

The standard grew from a previous British Standard, BS 5750, and was first published in 1987.  Since which time it has been revised and updated several times.  Updates have been published in 1994, 2000, 2008 and the current version (for the moment) is the 2015 version but a further update is expected in 2026.

All standards are meant to be reviewed every five years to see if an update is required, however, from the timeline above you can see that doesn’t always follow!

In terms of which are most popular, some remain essential, while others grow in importance due to regulation and market trends.  At the moment, there are a number of relatively new Net Zero standards and it would be expected that a number of new AI standards are also likely.

Here are the most widely adopted standards today:

Core management standards

  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management
Still the most implemented standard worldwide.
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental Management
Driven by sustainability and regulatory pressure.
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety
Replacing OHSAS 18001, now a key requirement in many sectors.

Growing in popularity

  • ISO 27001 – Information Security
Cybersecurity concerns make this a top priority in an increasingly data rich world.
  • ISO 50001 – Energy Management
Adoption is increasing as businesses focus on energy efficiency.

As with ISO 50001, increasingly blue chip and public sector organisations are requiring formal verification of Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon calculations.

Why these standards dominate

  • They address universal business risks
  • They align with legal and tender requirements
  • They support sustainability and data protection goals
  • Increasingly, ISO standards are also being aligned with the UN sustainable development goals
